Holding off a fast rising China, Germany continued to dominate in the global organic surface active agent trade. In 2014, Germany exported more than 1.7 million tonnes of organic surface active agents totaling 4.0 billion USD, 1% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was France, where it supplied 9.3% of its total organic surface active agent exports in value terms, accounting for 22.3% of France's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Germany was a net exporter on the surfactant market. Over the period under review, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was more pronounced due to high export prices.

The U.S. and Belgium were among the other main global suppliers of organic surface active agents in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporter from 2007 to 2014 was China (+24.5% per year). By virtue of this, China was able to significantly strengthen its position in the global export structure.

In 2014, Germany's top 5 trading partners were France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Austria, with a combined share 36.5% of German exports. The share of Poland increased significantly (+2.0 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated negative dynamics (-3.3 percentage points).
