Paper and Paperboard Market - Finland Ranks First Globally in Exports of Paper and Paperboard

Finland dominates on the paper and paperboard market. In 2014, Finland exported 5,598 thousand tonnes of paper and paperboard totaling 5,134 million USD, 2% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Germany, where it supplied 21% of its total paper and paperboard exports in value terms, accounting for 29% of Germany's total imports.

Overall, the global paper and paperboard trade dropped to 32,632 million USD, with a CAGR of -1% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it decreased from 37,795 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 34,033 thousand tonnes in 2014.

In 2014, Germany (12%), the U.S. (7%), the United Kingdom (7%), France (6%) and China (4%) were the leading destinations of paper and paperboard imports, together making up 36% of global imports. The share of China increased (+1 percentage points), while the share of the U.S. illustrated negative dynamics (-3 percentage points).

Germany and China were among the other main global suppliers of paper and paperboard in 2014 with a combined share of 24% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were China (+11% per year) and the Republic of Korea (+3% per year). China strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 5% in 2007 to 10% in 2014.
