From 2007 to 2014, EU production on the polyethylene market showed a steady decrease, falling from 7.4 million tonnes in 2007 to 6.3 million tonnes in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of -2.2% over the period under review. In value terms, EU polyethylene production decreased to 7.1 billion EUR in 2014, falling by -2.3% annually.

France was the largest producer of polyethylene in absolute volumes, with 1.6 million tonnes. It was followed by Belgium (918 thousand tonnes) and Italy (747 thousand tonnes).

Positive dynamics in polyethylene production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2014 were recorded in France (+1.8% per year), while for the other two EU leaders (Belgium and Italy) the paces of growth were more modest or negative.

France dominated in EU polyethylene production and trade. In 2014, it exported 41% of its total polyethylene output. Of this amount, 27% was supplied to Italy, where France's polyethylene held a 23% share of total Italy's imports.
