Germany Is the EU Leading Producer of Artificial Joints for Orthopedic Purposes

EU production of artificial joints for orthopedic purposes showed steady growth over the period from 2007 to 2014, rising from 6.0 million units in 2007 to 10.8 million units in 2014, and expanded with a CAGR of 8.8%. In value terms, EU artificial joint production decreased to 1,400 million EUR in 2014, falling by 5.6% annually.

The countries with the largest production of artificial joints in absolute volumes were Germany (3.3 million units), France (3.1 million units), Ireland (1.9 million units) and the United Kingdom (1.4 million units).

Positive dynamics in artificial joint production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2014 were recorded in France (+13.2% per year), while for the other three EU leaders (Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom) the pace of growth was more modest.

Germany dominated in EU artificial joint production and trade. In 2014, Germany exported 1,091 tonnes of artificial joint output. Of this amount, 14% was supplied to Switzerland, where Germany's artificial joints held a 44% share of total Switzerland imports.
