Despite a drop in exports in 2014, Germany was able to maintain its dominance in the global metal finishing machine trade. In 2014, Germany exported 5,033 units of metal finishing machines totaling 981 million USD, 11% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 26% of its total metal finishing machine exports in value terms, accounting for 30% of China's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Germany was a net exporter of metal finishing machines. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms.

Japan and China were among the other main global suppliers of metal finishing machines in 2014. The fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were China (+7% per year) and the U.S. (+5% per year). China was thus able to strengthen its position in the global export structure.

Germany's top 5 trading partners in 2014 were China, the U.S., the Russian Federation, Italy and France, with a combined 56% share of Germany's metal finishing machine exports. The share of China increased significantly (+14 percentage points), while the shares of the U.S., Italy and France illustrated negative dynamics (-1 percentage points for each).
