With a surge of exports in 2014, India seized control of the dry onion market. India exported 54 thousand tonnes of dry onion last year totaling 108 million USD, 28% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner on the global dehydrated onion market was Germany, where it supplied 15.1% of its total dry onion exports in value terms, accounting for 24.6% of Germany's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, India was a net exporter of dry onion. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced.

The U.S. and China were among the other main global suppliers of dry onion in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were China (+17.6% per year) and Pakistan (+57.4% per year). Even with that, it was India that significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.

In addition to Germany, India's top 4 trading partners in 2014 were the United Kingdom, the U.S., the Russian Federation and Belgium, with a combined 45.5% share of India's dry onion exports. The share of Belgium increased modestly (+4.3 percentage points), while the share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics (-4.0 percentage points).
