Despite a dip in exports in 2014, India was still able to continue its dominance in the global trade on the cotton yarn market. In 2014, India exported 1,255 thousand tonnes of cotton yarn totaling 4,127 million USD, 14% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 37% of its total cotton yarn exports in value terms, accounting for 24% of China's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, India was a net exporter of cotton yarn. Over the period under review, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms, this difference was even more pronounced.

China and Pakistan were among the other main global suppliers of cotton yarn in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Egypt (+14% per year) and India (+13% per year).

India's top 5 trading partners in 2014 were China, Bangladesh, Egypt, Viet Nam and the Republic of Korea, with a combined 63% share of India's cotton yarn exports. China significantly strengthened its position (by 33 percentage points), while the Republic of Korea saw its share reduced by 6 percentage points.
