Indonesia dominates in the global molasses trade. In 2014, Indonesia exported 939 thousand tonnes of molasses totaling 112 million USD, a robust 68% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner on the global molasses market was the Republic of Korea, where it supplied 48% of its total molasses exports in value terms, accounting for 39% of the Republic of Korea's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Indonesia was a net exporter of molasses. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced.

Zambia and Mexico were among the other main global suppliers of molasses in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Zambia (+86% per year) and the Netherlands (+35% per year). Zambia, by virtue of this meteoric growth, was able to significantly strengthen its position in the global export structure.

Indonesia's top 5 trading partners in 2014 were the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam, with a combined 76% share of Indonesia's molasses exports. The share of the Republic of Korea increased significantly (+19 percentage points), while the share of Viet Nam illustrated negative dynamics (-24 percentage points).
