Italy: Major EU Plastic Bag Manufacturer and Third Main Exporter

From 2007 to 2014, EU plastic bag production showed mixed dynamics, finally falling from 4,435 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 3,577 thousand tonnes in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of -3.0% over the period under review. In value terms, EU plastic bag production was 9.2 billion EUR in 2014, growing by +1.0% annually.

Italy was the largest producer of plastic sacks and bags in absolute volumes, with 842 thousand tonnes. It was distantly followed by Germany (505 thousand tonnes), Spain (416 thousand tonnes) and France (409 thousand tonnes).

Positive dynamics in plastic bag production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2014 were recorded in Germany (+0.4% per year), while for the other three EU leaders (Italy, Spain and France) the paces of growth were negative.

Italy dominated in EU plastic bag production and ranked third in trade. In 2014, it exported 18% of its total plastic sack and bag output. Of this amount, 23% was supplied to France, where Italy's plastic sacks and bags held a 16% share of total French imports.
