Italy Prevails in EU Paper Bag Production

From 2007 to 2014, EU paper bag production showed negative dynamics, falling from 39.0 million tonnes in 2007 to 32.2 million tonnes in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of -2.7% over the period under review. In value terms, EU paper bag production decreased to 38.7 billion EUR in 2014, falling by -2.4% annually.

Italy was the largest producer of paper sacks and bags in absolute volumes, with 5,073 thousand tonnes. It was distantly followed by France (3,342 thousand tonnes), Spain (3,194 thousand tonnes) and Poland (2,280 thousand tonnes).

Positive dynamics in paper bag production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2014 were recorded in Poland (+6.1% per year), while for the other three EU leaders (Italy, France and Spain) the paces of growth were negative.

Italy dominated in EU paper bag production and ranked third in trade. In 2014, it exported 11% of its total paper bag output. Of this amount, 25% was supplied to France, where Italy's sacks and bags of paper held an 18% share of total French imports.
