Italy Runs the Show in the EU Market for Products of Plaiting Materials

EU production of plaits and similar products of plaiting materials showed steady decrease dynamics over the period from 2007 to 2014, falling from 22.2 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 13.6 thousand tonnes in 2014. From 2007 to 2014, it dropped with a CAGR of 6.8%. In value terms, EU production of plaits and similar products of plaiting materials decreased to 35 million EUR in 2014, falling 5.2% annually.

The countries with the largest production of plaits in absolute volumes were Italy (1,927 tonnes), Hungary (685 tonnes), Spain (640 tonnes) and Lithuania (425 tonnes).

Positive dynamics in production of products of plaiting materials among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2014 were recorded in Hungary (+43% per year), while for the other three EU leaders (Italy, Spain and Lithuania) the pace of growth was more modest or negative.

Italy dominated in EU production and trade of plaits and similar products of plaiting materials. In 2014, Italy exported 31.5% of its total plait output. Of this amount, 17.4% was supplied to Greece, where Italian products of plaiting materials held a 5% share of total Greece imports.
