The printed circuit board industry, filled with companies whose products are in constant demand, is a key supplier to a large number of important branch industries.

These companies not only provide products, but also services, such as design and prototyping of new electronic devices, embedded software design, circuitry and assembly systems design, as well as stress and durability testing. They are integral players in the development and enhancement of various new consumer gadgets from mobile communications equipment to wearable devices, as well as non-consumer electronics used by the aerospace, automotive, energy, healthcare, industrial and other industries.

In addition, there are several other positive signs for the printed circuit board industry on the near horizon. Leading indicators are rising in some regions and new product designs are starting to show some life. Global printed circuit board market production is increasing, presenting more opportunities for the U.S. market. Moreover, due to rapidly changing technologies, printed circuit board manufacturers in the U.S. are constantly modifying their products to keep up with these ever-evolving times.

China was the main supplier of printed circuit boards into the U.S., with a 43% share of total U.S. imports in 2014. Overall, the fastest growing suppliers were China (+1.9% per year) and the UK (+1.1% per year) in total imports from 2007 to 2014. China significantly strengthened its position in the U.S. import structure, from 32% in 2007 to 44% in 2014.

In 2014, the main destinations of U.S. printed circuit board exports were Mexico (53%), and, distantly, China (7%) and Canada (6%). The share exported to Mexico increased (+15 percentage points), while the share sent to Canada illustrated negative dynamics (-15 percentage points). The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
