Mexico dominates in the global watermelon trade. In 2014, Mexico exported 663 thousand tonnes of watermelon totaling 313 million USD, 2% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner on the global watermelon market was the U.S., where it supplied 99% of its total watermelon exports in value terms, accounting for the lion's share of the U.S. total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Mexico was a net exporter of watermelon. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced, except for 2012-2014 when high import prices made it more notable.

Spain and the U.S. were among the other main global suppliers of watermelon in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were China (+30% per year) and Guatemala (+17% per year). Mexico and Spain strengthened their positions in the global export structure. In 2014, Mexico had only 3 trading partners: the U.S., Japan and Canada.
