New Zealand dominates in the global mechanical wood pulp trade. In 2014, New Zealand exported 233 thousand tonnes on the mechanical wood pulp market totaling 104 million USD, 6% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 48% of its total exports of mechanical wood pulp in value terms, accounting for the lion's share of China's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, New Zealand was a net exporter of mechanical wood pulp. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was more pronounced.

Norway and the U.S. were among the other main global suppliers of mechanical wood pulp in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were the Netherlands (+10% per year) and New Zealand (+6% per year). New Zealand strengthened its position in the global export structure.

In 2014, New Zealand's top 5 trading partners were China, Japan, Indonesia, Viet Nam and Pakistan, with a combined 98% share of New Zealand's mechanical wood pulp exports. The share of Indonesia increased (+2 percentage points), while the share of Japan illustrated negative dynamics (-54 percentage points). The supplies to the other countries were unstable.
