Silk Yarn Market - Romania Is the Runner-Up in EU Silk Yarn Production with Volumes Increasing

From 2007 to 2014, EU production on the silk yarn market showed negative dynamics, finally plunging from 12,570 tonnes in 2007 to 6,463 tonnes in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of -9.1% over the period under review. In value terms, EU silk yarn production reached 211 million EUR in 2014, growing by +5.7% annually.

Italy was the largest producer of silk yarn in absolute volumes, with 4,621 tonnes. It was distantly followed by Romania (1,699 tonnes).

Between 2007 and 2014, Romania showed positive dynamics with +6.4% per year growth. Over the period under review, Italy showed negative dynamics in relative volumes (-10.7% per year).

Italy dominated in EU silk yarn production and ranked second in trade. In 2014, it exported 11% of its total silk yarn output. Of this amount, 25% was supplied to the United Kingdom, where Italy's silk yarn held a 69% share of the country's total imports.
