Romania dominates in the global sunflower seed trade, strengthening its position in the global export structure from 8.4% in 2007 to 18.1% in 2014. It's main trading partner on the global sunflower seed market was France, where it supplied 15.1% of its total sunflower seed exports, accounting for 33.8% of France's total imports.

The global sunflower seed trade reached 3.3 billion USD, with a CAGR of 9.6% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed significant growth, rising from 3.3 million tonnes in 2007 to 4.6 million tonnes in 2014.

In 2014, Turkey (12.9%), the Netherlands (10.5%), Germany (9.7%), France (8.4%) and Spain (8.3%) were the leading destinations of sunflower seed imports, together making up 49.9% of global imports. The shares of global trade of all these countries increased, while the share of Italy illustrated negative dynamics (-2.9 percentage points).

Although Romania and Bulgaria were the leading suppliers of sunflower seed in 2014 with a combined share of 33.3% of global exports, the fastest growing exporter from 2007 to 2014 was Turkey (+22.7% per year).
