Spain Became the EU Major Manufacturer of Salt and Pure Sodium Chloride

From 2008 to 2014, EU production of salt and pure sodium chloride showed mixed dynamics, finally falling from 52 million tonnes in 2008 to 46 million tonnes in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of -2.2% over the period under review. In value terms, EU salt production reached 1,932 million EUR in 2014, growing by +3.0% annually.

The countries with the largest production of salt and sodium chloride in absolute volumes were Spain (4,255 thousand tonnes), Poland (4,155 thousand tonnes) and Italy (2,757 thousand tonnes).

From 2008 to 2014, each country among the production leaders showed negative dynamics: -1.1% for Spain, -1.9% for Poland and -2.4% for Italy.

Spain dominated in EU salt and sodium chloride production and ranked third in trade. In 2014, it exported 27% of its total salt and sodium chloride output. Of this amount, 47% was supplied to France, where Spain's salt held an 83% share of total French imports.
