Spain Ranks First in the EU Antibiotic Trade

From 2007 to 2014, EU antibiotic production showed mixed dynamics, rising from 34.1 tonnes in 2007 to 68.1 tonnes in 2014. Over the period under review, it expanded with a CAGR of 10.4%. In value terms, EU antibiotic production decreased to 2.1 billion EUR in 2014, falling 9.0% annually.

The countries with the largest production of antibiotics in absolute volumes were Spain (6.7 tonnes), Italy (5.6 tonnes), Portugal (1.5 tonnes) and France (0.4 tonnes).

Positive dynamics in antibiotics production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2014 were recorded in Portugal (more than +200% per year), while for the other two EU leaders (Spain and Italy) the pace of growth was more modest.

Spain dominated in EU antibiotic production and trade. In 2014, Spain exported 10.9 tonnes antibiotics. Of this amount, 40% was supplied to Austria.
