Germany was one of the leaders in the global trade of ballasts for discharge lamps or tubes. In 2014, Germany exported 22 thousand tonnes of ballasts for discharge lamps or tubes totaling 425 million USD, 4% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the Czech Republic, where it supplied 11% of its total ballasts for discharge lamps or tubes exports in value terms, accounting for 42% of the Czech Republic's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Germany was a net exporter of ballasts for discharge lamps or tubes. In this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms (except 2011). However, in physical terms, the difference was more pronounced due to high import prices.

China and Mexico were also among the main global suppliers of ballasts for discharge lamps or tubes in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Japan (+9% per year) and the U.S. (+6% per year).

In 2014, Germany's top 5 trading partners were the Czech Republic, Italy, the U.S., Austria and France, with a combined 37% share of German exports. The share of Austria increased significantly (+5 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated negative dynamics (-5 percentage points).
