The EU Paint and Varnish Industry Displays a Pattern of Steady Decline

From 2007 to 2014, EU production of paints and varnishes showed a steady decrease, falling from 3.3 million tonnes in 2007 to 2.5 million tonnes in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of -3.6% over the period under review. In value terms, EU paint and varnish production was 9.7 million EUR in 2014, falling by -2.0% annually.

Italy was the largest producer of paints and varnishes in absolute volumes, with 469 thousand tonnes. It was distantly followed by the United Kingdom (271 thousand tonnes), France (263 thousand tonnes) and Spain (251 thousand tonnes).

Italy (-2.7% per year), France (-9.1% per year) and Spain (-4.6% per year) showed negative dynamics over the analyzed period.

Italy dominated in EU paint and varnish production and ranked second in trade. In 2014, it exported 50% of its total paint and varnish output. Of this amount, 9% was supplied to Germany, where Italy's paints and varnishes held a 13% share of total German imports.
