The U.S. dominates in the global chemical wood pulp trade. In 2014, the U.S. exported 7,346 thousand tonnes of chemical wood pulp totaling 5,453 million USD, 1% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 24% of its total exports on the chemical wood pulp market in value terms, accounting for 12% of China's total imports.

Overall, the global chemical wood pulp trade reached 33,208 million USD, with a CAGR of 3% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed growth, rising from 43,185 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 52,019 thousand tonnes in 2014.

In 2014, China (31%) was the leading destination of chemical wood pulp imports, followed by Germany (9%), the U.S. (9%), Italy (6%) and France (4%). These five leaders made up 59% of global imports. The share of China increased significantly (+14 percentage points), while the share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics (-3 percentage points).

Canada and Brazil were among the other main global suppliers of chemical wood pulp in 2014 with a combined share of 32% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Brazil (+8% per year) and Indonesia (+7% per year). Brazil strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 11% in 2007 to 16% in 2014.
