The U.S. Remains the Global Leader in Exports of Case Materials

The U.S. dominates in the global case material trade. In 2014, the U.S. exported 4,909 thousand tonnes of case materials totaling 2,913 million USD, 8% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Mexico, where it supplied 22% of its total case material exports in value terms, accounting for 91% of Mexico's total imports.

Overall, the global case material trade reached 13,628 million USD, with a CAGR of 3% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it increased from 20,982 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 23,437 thousand tonnes in 2014.

In 2014, Germany (9%), Italy (6%), the United Kingdom (5%), Mexico (5%) and the U.S. (5%) were the leading destinations of case material imports, together making up 30% of global imports. The share of Mexico increased (+1 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated negative dynamics (-2 percentage points).

Germany and Sweden were among the other main global suppliers of case materials in 2014 with a combined share of 25% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Poland (+11% per year) and the U.S. (+6% per year). The U.S. strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 18% in 2007 to 21% in 2014.
