Total imports of alcohol and its derivatives by EU Member States have been steadily declining over the past two years, finally slipping to 7,715 million EUR in 2015. A sharp fall in 2009 was followed by rapid growth over the next three years, until the growth lost its momentum by 2013. The data on the EU trade with non-EU countries displayed that the EU remains a net importer of alcohol and its derivatives.

The Netherlands (17%), Germany (17%), Belgium (15%), and Italy (10%) were the largest importers on the alcohol market and its derivatives among the Member States, together comprising 58% of the total EU imports. Germany's and Italy's (-3 percentage points each) shares illustrated negative dynamics, while the shares of the Netherlands (+4 percentage points) and Belgium (+3 percentage points) increased from 2007 to 2015.

A little over half of the total EU imports were shared between the EU Member States, while extra-EU imports accounted for about 43%. In 2015, the value of extra-EU imports of alcohol and its halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated, or nitrosated derivatives stood at 3,291 million USD, which was 1% less than the year before.

On the other hand, the share of extra-EU imports in total apparent consumption of alcohol and its derivatives by the EU reached a peak in the recent years. In 2015, about 44% of European consumption was supplied by non-EU countries, in particular Russia, the U.S., and Saudi Arabia. Despite the decline in total EU imports, the significant share of extra-EU imports is an indicator of the high attractiveness of European alcohol and its derivatives market to foreign suppliers.
