The U.S. ranks first in imports on the cement market, accounting for a 6% share (based on USD). It was followed by Algeria (5%), Sri Lanka (4%), and France (4%). In 2015, U.S. cement imports totaled 940 million USD, which was 210 million USD (29%) higher than the year before.

From 2007 to 2015, U.S. cement imports showed mixed dynamics. A sharp fall in 2008 was followed by another 39% plunge over the next year. Imports continued to decline slightly over 2010-2011. From 2012 to 2015, they turned upwards, with a rapid acceleration by the end of the period. Despite a considerable increase over the last few years, imports failed to approach the peak level of 2007.

Despite imports remaining far below their pre-crisis peak, the U.S. continues to be one of the biggest markets for global exporters.

Canada was the main supplier of cement into the U.S., with a 39% share of total U.S. imports in 2015, based on USD. It was distantly followed by China (12%) and Greece (11%). Greece was the fastest growing supplier (+8.8% per year) from 2007 to 2015, while the import from Canada remained relatively stable. China's import declined by -14.8% per year. From 2007 to 2015, Canada and Greece strengthened their positions in the U.S. import structure by +16 percentage points and +8 percentage points, respectively, while China lost -10 percentage points over the same period.

From 2007 to 2015, the U.S. was a net importer of cement. However, on average, exports showed growth over the period under review, while imports declined. Net U.S. imports of cement accelerated last year, after a five-year period of remaining relatively stable. In 2015, this industry ran a significant trade deficit of 691 million USD.
