Asian Wine Market Reached 3B Litres

According to market research conducted by IndexBox, the Asian wine market showed steady growth rising from 2,238 million litres in 2007 to 3,060 million litres in 2014. It expanded with a CAGR of +4.5% over the period under review.

Production of wine showed similar dynamics over the last few years. In 2014, Asian wine output expanded to 2,302 million litres, growing with an annual rate of +3.3% from 2007 to 2014. The country with the largest production of wine in absolute volumes was China (1,908 million litres) which dominated in Asian production. Georgia (110 million litres), Japan (85 million litres), and Turkmenistan (41 million litres) followed by a large margin.

Similar dynamics were observed in the volume of harvested area of grapes. It gradually increased from 2007 to 2013 with an annual rate of +2.5% reaching the level of 2,046 thousand Ha in 2013. The countries with the largest harvested area of grapes were China (730 thousand Ha), Turkey (469 thousand Ha), Iran (208 thousand Ha), India (118 thousand Ha), and Uzbekistan (114 thousand Ha) that together accounted for 81% of the harvested area of grapes in Asia.

Yields in most wine producing countries have been subject to significant fluctuations over the analyzed period. They also vary greatly from country to country. India, China, and Uzbekistan had the highest levels of yield in 2013 and were more than 116 thousand Hg/Ha. Iran and Uzbekistan were among the major producing countries with the highest growth rates of yield. From 2007 to 2013, they gained 31.9 and 27.4 thousand Hg/Ha, respectively, with an average growth rate of + 6.7% and + 4.6%.

In 2014, China (43.4%) and Japan (31.6%) were the leading destinations of wine imports. The share of China increased significantly (+15%) while the share of Japan illustrated negative dynamics (-6%). In 2014, Georgia was the main Asian supplier of wine with a 36.5% of total Asian exports. It was followed by Israel (15.4%), Singapore (14.4%), and the United Arab Emirates (11.2%).
