From 2007 to 2014, EU production of twine, cordage, rope and cables showed mixed dynamics, all the while rising from 209 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 221 thousand tonnes in 2014. It expanded with a CAGR of 0.8% over the period under review. In value terms, EU rope and cordage production decreased to 578 million EUR in 2014, falling by 0.8% annually.

China dominates in the global rope and cable trade. It was the fastest growing exporter from 2007 to 2014 (+14.4% per year), and significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure from 13.9 in 2007 to 28.4 in 2014. 17.8% of its total rope and cable exports in 2014 was shipped to the U.S., accounting for 33.5% of total U.S. imports.

China, India, the USA, the EU-28 and the Republic of Korea represented more than 71% of global output. From 2007-2013, these countries showed steady growth in production volumes. Especially high were the growth levels in China (+8.9%) and the USA (+8.6%).
