France Sees a Significant Drop in Champagne Exports, Reaching a Total of $3.6 Billion in 2023.

In 2023, shipments abroad of champagne decreased by -32% to 94M litres for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 139M litres in 2022, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, champagne exports shrank dramatically to $3.6B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total exports indicated notable growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 45%. Exports by Country

the United States (18M litres), the UK (14M litres) and Singapore (9M litres) were the main destinations of champagne exports from France, together comprising 43% of total exports. Japan, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Japan (with a CAGR of +5.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for champagne exported from France were the United States ($739M), the UK ($456M) and Singapore ($385M), with a combined 43% share of total exports. Japan, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Japan, with a CAGR of +9.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the champagne price stood at $39 per litre (FOB, France), picking up by 22% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($46 per litre), while the average price for exports to Australia ($27 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
