According to market research conducted by IndexBox, from 2007 to 2015, the global coconut market volume remained relatively stable in physical terms, despite the slight negative trend pattern observed in recent years. In 2015, the market amounted to 60,644 thousand tonnes. In value terms, the market showed a growth with fluctuations, equalling 12,073 million USD in 2015.

The countries with the highest consumption were Indonesia (29%) and Philippines (25%), followed by India (18%), Brazil (5%) and Sri Lanka (4%), together comprising almost 81% of global consumption. Amongst the leading consuming countries, high levels of per capita consumption were recorded in the Philippines (148.4 kg/person) and Sri Lanka (122.3 kg/year in 2015) - these figures were significantly higher than the world average of 8.3 kg/year. The annual growth of per capita consumption from 2007 to 2015 was the most notable in Sri Lanka, with +1.3% growth.

In 2015, the volume of global exports totaled 865 thousand tonnes, with a positive dynamic being posted over the last few years. In 2015, Indonesia exported 526 thousand tonnes, comprising 61% of global exports. Besides Indonesia, the largest global suppliers in 2015 were Thailand (10%), followed by India (5%), Malaysia (5%), Viet Nam (4%), Mexico and the Netherlands (2% each).

The volume of global imports totaled 853 thousand tonnes in 2015. The imports dynamic was generally in line with exports: these trade flows globally complement each other. Following the low trade intensity, the share of imports in global demand accounted for only 1%. In 2015, China (319 thousand tonnes), Malaysia (208 million tonnes) and Thailand (114 thousand tonnes) were the leading destinations for coconut imports, together comprising 75% of global imports in physical terms. They were followed by the U.S. (6%), the UAE (4%), the Netherlands and Singapore (2%).
