It expanded with a CAGR of +5.1% over the period under review. At the same time, in 2015, the global contact lenses market value reduced to 8.5 billion USD. The main reason is the reduction in prices for products, which is due to technological progress in the field of lens production and their quality, as well as because of the saturation of the market.

Driven by the growth of population, rising incomes in Asian countries, continuous investment in research and development amid an overall growth of global pharmaceutical industry, as well as vision care issues in many professions, the contact lenses market is expected to continue an upward consumption trend, expanding with an anticipated CAGR of +4.6%, which will lead the market volume to 19.3 billion units in 2025.

Japan (2.8 billion units), the U.S. (2.6 billion units), Germany (1.2 billion units) and the UK (1.0 billion units) were the countries with the highest consumption levels, together accounting for almost 62% of global figures.

In terms of the key consumer countries in 2015, Japan (22.4 units per person), the UK (16.0 units per person), Germany (14.3 units per person) and the U.S. (8.1 units per person) registered a per capita consumption figure higher than the global average of 1.7 units per persons.

Contact lenses production reached 12.3 billion units in 2015, with a positive dynamic throughout the analyzed period. From 2007 to 2015, contact lenses production grew at an annual average rate of growth of +6.5%.

In 2015, Ireland and the U.S. were the key world contact lenses producing countries with an output of about 2.8 billion units and 2.2 billion units, respectively. The was followed by Taiwan (1.3 billion units) and Germany (1.2 billion units). The major producers countries together accounted for 69% of total global output.
