Global Pepper Market Reached 521K Tonnes in 2015

According to market research conducted by IndexBox, the global pepper market showed steady growth, rising from 449 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 521 thousand tonnes in 2015. From 2007 to 2015, it expanded with a CAGR of +1.9%.

The countries with the highest consumption were India (72 thousand tonnes), the U.S. (64 thousand tonnes), Vietnam (55 thousand tonnes) and China (51 thousand tonnes), together comprising near 50% of global consumption. Among the leading consuming countries, high levels of per capita consumption were recorded in Viet Nam (592 g/year in 2015) and Malaysia (532 g/year), significantly higher than the world average of 71 kg/year. In these countries, per capita consumption grew steadily from 2007-2015. The annual growth of per capita consumption from 2007 to 2015 was the most notable in India, with +8.8% growth, then Viet Nam with +4.0% and China with +9.6% growth.

Total global pepper imports totaled 377 thousand tonnes in 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period under review. The U.S. (21%, based on physical terms) and then Viet Nam and Germany (8%, each) were the main global destinations for pepper, with a combined share of 37% of total imports in 2015. Viet Nam has always been the largest exporter of pepper; in 2015, however, the country was forced to step up imports due to a cutback in production.

Global exports showed steady growth over the last few years, with mild fluctuations over the period under review. In 2015, global pepper export expanded to 401 thousand tonnes. In value terms, global exports of pepper grew by +15.7% per year from 2007 to 2015, amounting to 3,408 million USD in 2015. In 2015, the main global suppliers of pepper were Viet Nam (32%) and then Indonesia (14%), Brazil (10%) and India (9%). From 2007 to 2015, Viet Nam and Indonesia had the highest annual rate of growth in terms of exports amongst the leaders, with +5.8% and +5.3%, respectively.
