Grapefruit and Pomelo Imports to the EU Surged to a Decade's Record $562M

Total imports of grapefruits and pomelos in the EU stood at $562M in 2020, increasing by +8.7% from the previous year. The Netherlands, France and Germany constitute the largest grapefruit-importing countries in Europe. The Netherlands serves as an entry point for the European market, with Spain, China and South Africa together comprising over 80% of the country's import volume. The Netherlands, Spain and Israel dominated French imports, together accounting for 89% of its total volume. Spain, China and South Africa provided 72% of the total grapefruit supplies to Germany in 2020.

Grapefruit and Pomelo Imports in the EU

In 2020, grapefruit imports stood at $562M (IndexBox estimates), increasing by +8.7% from the previous year. In physical terms, approx. 565K tons of grapefruits were imported in the EU, which was +5.2% higher compared with the previous year.

The Netherlands ($186M) constitutes the largest market for imported grapefruits in the EU, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by France ($78M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 13% share.

In physical terms, the Netherlands was the key importing country with an import of about 194K tons, which recorded 34% of total imports. France (67K tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (58K tons), Poland (56K tons), Romania (36K tons) and Italy (26K tons). All these countries together occupied approx. 43% share of total imports. Belgium (23K tons), the Czech Republic (17K tons) and Lithuania (8.9K tons) took a little share of total imports.

In 2020, the grapefruit import price in the EU amounted to $995 per ton, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Grapefruits and Pomelos to the Netherlands

Spain (63K tons), China (53K tons) and South Africa (46K tons) were the main suppliers of grapefruit imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 83% share of total imports. Turkey, Israel and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.3%.

In value terms, the largest grapefruit suppliers to the Netherlands were Spain ($71M), South Africa ($47M) and China ($32M), with a combined 80% share of total imports. Turkey, Israel and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

The average grapefruit import price stood at $962 per ton in 2020, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year.

Imports of Grapefruits and Pomelos to France

The Netherlands (31K tons), Spain (17K tons) and Israel (12K tons) were the main suppliers of grapefruit imports to France, together comprising 89% of total imports. Turkey and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.1%.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($34M), Spain ($22M) and Israel ($14M) appeared to be the largest grapefruit suppliers to France, with a combined 90% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 4.9%.

In 2020, the average grapefruit import price amounted to $1,153 per ton, with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year.

Spain (20K tons), China (14K tons) and South Africa (7.6K tons) were the main suppliers of grapefruit imports to Germany, with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Turkey, the U.S. and Israel, which together accounted for a further 26%.

In value terms, the largest grapefruit suppliers to Germany were Spain ($25M), China ($14M) and South Africa ($12M), together comprising 72% of total imports. The Netherlands, the U.S., Israel and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

In 2020, the average grapefruit import price amounted to $1,217 per ton, growing by 5.1% against the previous year.
