July 2023: South Africa's Carrot and Turnip Export Declines Sharply to $672K

South Africa Carrot And Turnip Exports

After two months of growth, overseas shipments of carrots and turnips decreased by -21.1% to 1.5K tons in July 2023. In general, total exports indicated a pronounced increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, exports increased by +42.9% against February 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 with an increase of 27% m-o-m. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 1.9K tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following month.

In value terms, carrot and turnip exports plummeted to $672K (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, exports decreased by -21.8% against May 2023 indices. Exports by Country

Mozambique (583 tons), Swaziland (297 tons) and Namibia (164 tons) were the main destinations of carrot and turnip exports from South Africa, with a combined 69% share of total exports.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +68.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mozambique ($128K) remains the key foreign market for carrot and turnip exports from South Africa, comprising 19% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($56K), with an 8.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a 7% share.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Mozambique amounted to +5.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Swaziland (-0.8% per month) and Lesotho (+0.6% per month).

Export Prices by Country

In July 2023, the carrot and turnip price amounted to $446 per ton (FOB, South Africa), rising by 5.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 44% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $580 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($711 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($189 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cote d'Ivoire (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
