Despite the total EU Member States imports of unwrought and not alloyed zinc reaching their highest volumes in the past seven years, those volumes remain almost at half of their pre-crisis values. A weak attempt at post-crisis recovery exhausted its growth in 2011 and was followed by a period of swinging, which eventually led total imports on the zinc market value to 2,814 million EUR in 2015. Data concerning the EU trade with non-EU countries shows that the EU remains a net importer of zinc.

Total EU Imports Of Zinc, Unwrought (Not Alloyed)

Germany (25%), Belgium (16%), the Netherlands (11%), and Italy (9%) were the largest importers of unwrought and not alloyed zinc, together comprising 61% of total EU imports. The shares of Germany and Belgium (+6 percentage points and +4 percentage points, respectively) increased from 2007 to 2015, while the share of the Netherlands remained relatively stable. Italy's (-10 percentage points) share declined over the same period.

The major value of trade has been conducted between the EU Member States, while extra-EU imports comprise about 19% of total imports. In 2015, the value of extra-EU imports of unwrought and not alloyed zinc dropped to 537 million EUR, which was 10% less than the year before.

EU Zinc, Unwrought (Not Alloyed) Market Structure – Domestic Supply Vs. Extra-EU Imports

Against the backdrop of a general reduction in import volume, the EU has significantly reduced zinc purchases from non-member States, mainly from Norway, Namibia, and Peru. The share of extra-EU imports in the EU zinc apparent consumption has been declining steadily from 2010, amounting to about 18% in 2015.

The gradual decrease in the share of extra-EU imports in apparent consumption signals the strengthening of European producers on the EU market. The recovery of the EU economy is expected to have a beneficial effect on the growth of zinc industry in the medium term.
