The global pepper market showed steady growth, rising from 449 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 521 thousand tonnes in 2015. From 2007 to 2015, it expanded with a CAGR of +1.9%.

Pepper demand is created both by the end consumer, purchasing the product for their personal food requirements, and the corporate market, that uses spicy products in their production processes. Meat processing plants can be classed as the main corporate consumer: pepper is added to sausages and other products. Hotels, restaurants and catering is a further consumer segment of pepper. Ultimately, product demand will depend on the wealth of the population and population growth - people are end consumers of pepper.

According to market research conducted by IndexBox, the countries with the highest consumption were India (72 thousand tonnes), the U.S. (64 thousand tonnes), Vietnam (55 thousand tonnes) and China (51 thousand tonnes), together comprising near 50% of global consumption.

Among the leading consuming countries, high levels of per capita consumption were recorded in Viet Nam (592 g/year in 2015) and Malaysia (532 g/year), significantly higher than the world average of 71 kg/year. In these countries, per capita consumption grew steadily from 2007-2015. The annual growth of per capita consumption from 2007 to 2015 was the most notable in India, with +8.8% growth, then Viet Nam with +4.0% and China with +9.6% growth.

Market performance is forecast to accelerate, with an anticipated CAGR of +2.5% for the five-year period from 2015 to 2020, which is expected to lead the market volume to 588 thousand tonnes by the end of 2020.
