Which Country Produces the Most Apples in the World?

Global apple consumption amounted to 87,387 thousand tonnes in 2015, ascending by +4.0% against the previous year level. Overall, the global apple consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +18% from the previous year level. In that year, the global apple consumption attained its maximum volume of 91,153 thousand tonnes. From 2014 to 2015, the total apple consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Apples Production

With nearly 41,387 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading apple consuming country, accounting for 47% of global consumption. The other major consumers were the United States (5,751 thousand tonnes) and India (2,675 thousand tonnes), with a share of 7% and 3%, respectively. Moreover, apple consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by the United States sevenfold. They were followed by Russia with a 3% of global consumption share and Poland with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of apple consumption in China stood at +5.5%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+4.2% per year) and India (+6.2% per year).

The highest levels of apple per capita consumption was registered in Poland (66.05 kg/year), followed by China (29.41 kg/year), Russia (18.33 kg/year), the United States (17.87 kg/year) and India (2.04 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of apple was estimated at 10.15 kg/year in 2015.

In Poland, per capita apple consumption has grown noticably (+16.9% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Poland per capita consumption reached 66.05 kg/year as compared with 18.92 kg/year in 2007.
