In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the areca nut output was India (578 thousand tonnes), accounting for 54% of global production. Moreover, areca nut output in India exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, China (121 thousand tonnes), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Myanmar with a share of 11%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of areca nut producton in India stood at +2.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: China (-1.4% per year) and Myanmar (+2.3% per year).

Global Areca Nut Production

Global areca nut production amounted to 1,073 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -2.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global areca nut output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +0.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +22% from the previous year level. In that year, the global areca nut production attained its maximum volume of 1,341 thousand tonnes. From 2014 to 2015, the total areca nut output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global areca nut production was primarily driven by disposable income growth and diversification of diet. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the areca nut output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a slight contraction of the yield figures.

The world areca nut harvested area amounted to 847 thousand ha in 2015, which was -6.5% less than the previous year figure. The areca nut harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.5% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total areca nut harvested area peaked in 2012, falling back in the following year. From 2013 to 2015, the total areca nut harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
