Which Country Produces the Most Asparagus in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the asparagus output was China (6,568 thousand tonnes), accounting for 87% of global production. Moreover, asparagus output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Peru (381 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Mexico with a share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of asparagus producton in China stood at +0.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Peru (+3.7% per year) and Mexico (+15.4% per year).

Global Asparagus Production

Global asparagus production amounted to 7,549 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -3.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global asparagus output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +0.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +10% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global asparagus production attained its maximum volume of 8,306 thousand tonnes in 2012. From 2013 to 2015, the total asparagus output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global asparagus production was primarily driven by popularity of healthy eating. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the asparagus output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world asparagus harvested area amounted to 1,435 thousand ha in 2015, which was -1.1% less than the previous year figure. The asparagus harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.3% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total asparagus harvested area peaked in 2012, falling back in the following year. From 2013 to 2015, the total asparagus harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
