In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of production in 2015 were Russia (629 thousand tonnes), China (514 thousand tonnes), France (130 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 70% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of buckwheat production among the main producing countries was attained by France (+1.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the output figures.

Global Buckwheat Production

Global buckwheat production amounted to 1,812 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -5.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global buckwheat output pursued a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures decreased at an average annual rate of -3.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +63% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global buckwheat production attained its maximum volume of 2,376 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total buckwheat output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, global buckwheat production was buoyed by growth of population and popularity of healthy eating. These key factors are to remain relevant with regard to buckwheat output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a noticeable curtailment of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world buckwheat harvested area amounted to 1,779 thousand ha in 2015, which was -11.6% less than the previous year figure. The buckwheat harvested area indicated a pronounced contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -5.2% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total buckwheat harvested area peaked in 2007, declining in the following year. From 2008 to 2015, the total buckwheat harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
