In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the canary seed output was Canada (110 thousand tonnes), accounting for 54% of global production. Moreover, canary seed output in Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Argentina (48 thousand tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Thailand with a share of 17%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of canary seed producton in Canada stood at -4.7%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Argentina (+23.3% per year) and Thailand (+1.1% per year).

Global Canary Seed Production

Global canary seed production amounted to 203 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, the global canary seed output pursued a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures decreased at an average annual rate of -0.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +19% from the previous year level. In that year, the global canary seed production reached its maximum volume, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, global canary seed production was buoyed by popularity of healthy eating. These key factors are to remain relevant with regard to canary seed output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a noticeable curtailment of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world canary seed harvested area amounted to 215 thousand ha in 2015, which was -7.3% less than the previous year figure. The canary seed harvested area indicated a pronounced contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -3.6% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total canary seed harvested area peaked in 2007, declining in the following year. From 2008 to 2015, the total canary seed harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
