In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the carrot and turnip output was China (17,866 thousand tonnes), accounting for 45% of global production. Moreover, carrot and turnip output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Uzbekistan (1,897 thousand tonnes), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Russia with a share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of carrot and turnip producton in China stood at +5.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Uzbekistan (+11.1% per year) and Russia (+3.0% per year).

Global Carrots And Turnips Production

Global carrot and turnip production amounted to 39,793 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +2.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global carrot and turnip output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +11% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global carrot and turnip production attained its maximum volume of 39,793 thousand tonnes in 2008. From 2009 to 2015, the total carrot and turnip output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global carrot and turnip production was primarily driven by growth of population. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the carrot and turnip output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world carrot and turnip harvested area amounted to 1,459 thousand ha in 2015, which was 6.5% more than the previous year figure. The carrot and turnip harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +3.2% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total carrot and turnip harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand for globally.
