In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of cashew nut production were Nigeria (922 thousand tonnes), India (772 thousand tonnes), Viet Nam (590 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 53% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of cashew nut production among the main producing countries was attained by Nigeria (+4.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the output figures.

Global Cashew Nut Production

Global cashew nut production amounted to 4,275 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +15.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global cashew nut output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015, when the output figure increased by +15% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cashew nut production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global cashew nut production was primarily driven by disposable income growth and popularity of healthy eating. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the cashew nut output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a noticeable contraction of the yield figures.

The world cashew nut harvested area amounted to 6,220 thousand ha in 2015, which was 3.0% more than the previous year figure. The cashew nut harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +3.4% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total cashew nut harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand for globally.
