Global cassava market

In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of cassava production were Nigeria (54,944 thousand tonnes), Thailand (30,206 thousand tonnes), Indonesia (23,109 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 40% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of cassava production among the main producing countries was attained by Nigeria (+3.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global Cassava Production

Global cassava production amounted to 273,164 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +1.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global cassava output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +5% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cassava production attained its maximum volume of 273,164 thousand tonnes in 2011. From 2012 to 2015, the total cassava output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global cassava production was primarily driven by growth of African and Latin population. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the cassava output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a slight contraction of the yield figures.

The world cassava harvested area amounted to 24,152 thousand ha in 2015, which was 1.2% more than the previous year figure. The cassava harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +3.0% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total cassava harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand for globally.
