In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the castor oil seed output was India (1,549 thousand tonnes), accounting for 86% of global production. Moreover, castor oil seed output in India exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Mozambique (69 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by China with a share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of castor oil seed producton in India stood at +4.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Mozambique (+3.0% per year) and China (-11.0% per year).

Global Castor Oil Seed Production

Global castor oil seed production amounted to 1,795 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -8.0% against the previous year level. Overall, the global castor oil seed output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +58% from the previous year level. In that year, the global castor oil seed production reached its maximum volume, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global castor oil seed production was primarily driven by population growth and production of medical care and personal care goods. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the castor oil seed output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a slight curtailment of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world castor oil seed harvested area amounted to 1,325 thousand ha in 2015, which was -8.3% less than the previous year figure. The castor oil seed harvested area indicated a small contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -1.0% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total castor oil seed harvested area peaked in 2011, falling back in the following year. From 2012 to 2015, the total castor oil seed harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
