In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the chestnut output was China (1,678 thousand tonnes), accounting for 82% of global production. Moreover, chestnut output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Bolivia (89 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Turkey with a share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of chestnut producton in China stood at +3.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Bolivia (+6.0% per year) and Turkey (+2.4% per year).

Global Chestnut Production

Global chestnut production amounted to 2,058 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, the global chestnut output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +12% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global chestnut production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global chestnut production was primarily driven by population growth and popularity of healthy eating. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the chestnut output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world chestnut harvested area amounted to 546 thousand ha in 2015, which was 2.8% more than the previous year figure. The chestnut harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +1.9% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total chestnut harvested area peaked in 2012, falling back in the following year. From 2013 to 2015, the total chestnut harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
