In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the chick peas output was India (10,984 thousand tonnes), accounting for 73% of global production. Moreover, chick peas output in India exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Australia (661 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Pakistan with a share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of chick peas producton in India stood at +7.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Australia (+9.8% per year) and Pakistan (-4.2% per year).

Global Chick Peas Production

Global chick peas production amounted to 15,036 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +9.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global chick peas output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +5.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +21% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global chick peas production attained its maximum volume of 15,036 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total chick peas output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global chick peas production was primarily driven by population growth and popularity of healthy eating. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the chick peas output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world chick peas harvested area amounted to 14,573 thousand ha in 2015, which was 4.2% more than the previous year figure. The chick peas harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +3.3% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total chick peas harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand for globally.
