Which Country Produces the Most Chilies and Peppers in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the chili and pepper output was China (16,390 thousand tonnes), accounting for 50% of global production. Moreover, chili and pepper output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Mexico (2,822 thousand tonnes), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Turkey with a share of 7%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of chili and pepper producton in China stood at +2.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Mexico (+5.1% per year) and Turkey (+2.8% per year).

Global Chilies And Peppers Production

Global chili and pepper production amounted to 32,934 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +1.9% against the previous year level. Overall, the global chili and pepper output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when the output figure increased by +4% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global chili and pepper production attained its maximum volume of 32,934 thousand tonnes in 2009. From 2010 to 2015, the total chili and pepper output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global chili and pepper production was primarily driven by growth of Asian and Latin population and diversification of diet. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the chili and pepper output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world chili and pepper harvested area amounted to 1,934 thousand ha in 2015, which was almost equal to the previous year figure. The chili and pepper harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +1.5% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total chili and pepper harvested area peaked in 2012, falling back in the following year. From 2013 to 2015, the total chili and pepper harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
