In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of citrus fruit production were China (5,164 thousand tonnes), Nigeria (3,712 thousand tonnes), Colombia (767 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 77% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of citrus fruit production among the main producing countries was attained by China (+4.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global Citrus Fruit Production

Global citrus fruit production amounted to 12,478 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, the global citrus fruit output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +14% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global citrus fruit production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global citrus fruit production was primarily driven by disposable income growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the citrus fruit output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world citrus fruit harvested area amounted to 1,383 thousand ha in 2015, which was 1.6% more than the previous year figure. The citrus fruit harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +1.7% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total citrus fruit harvested area peaked in 2012, falling back in the following year. From 2013 to 2015, the total citrus fruit harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
