In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of cottonseed production were India (22,009 thousand tonnes), China (17,343 thousand tonnes), the United States (8,744 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 62% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of cottonseed production among the main producing countries was attained by India (+6.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the output figures.

Global Cottonseed Production

Global cottonseed production amounted to 77,261 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -2.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global cottonseed output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +0.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +15% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cottonseed production attained its maximum volume of 79,385 thousand tonnes in 2012. From 2013 to 2015, the total cottonseed output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global cottonseed production was primarily driven by popularity of healthy eating. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the cottonseed output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world cottonseed harvested area amounted to 34,156 thousand ha in 2015, which was -2.0% less than the previous year figure. The cottonseed harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.2% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total cottonseed harvested area peaked in 2014, falling back in the following year.
