Which Country Produces the Most Grapefruits in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the grapefruit output was China (3,939 thousand tonnes), accounting for 45% of global production. Moreover, grapefruit output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, the United States (828 thousand tonnes), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by South Africa with a share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of grapefruit producton in China stood at +6.7%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (-7.0% per year) and South Africa (+3.2% per year).

Global Grapefruits Production

Global grapefruit production amounted to 8,691 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +1.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global grapefruit output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +6% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global grapefruit production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global grapefruit production was primarily driven by disposable income growth and population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the grapefruit output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world grapefruit harvested area amounted to 337 thousand ha in 2015, which was almost equal to the previous year figure. The grapefruit harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +1.2% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total grapefruit harvested area peaked in 2013, falling back in the following year.
