Which Country Produces the Most Green Maize in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the maize output was the United States (3,166 thousand tonnes), accounting for 34% of global production. Moreover, maize output in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Mexico (823 thousand tonnes), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Nigeria with a share of 8%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of maize producton in the United States stood at -3.4%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Mexico (+4.4% per year) and Nigeria (+2.7% per year).

Global Green Maize Production

Global maize production amounted to 9,409 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -2.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global maize output pursued a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures decreased at an average annual rate of -0.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +4% from the previous year level. In that year, the global maize production reached its maximum volume, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, global maize production was buoyed by popularity of healthy eating and growth of population. These key factors are to remain relevant with regard to maize output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a slight contraction of the yield figures.

The world maize harvested area amounted to 1,094 thousand ha in 2015, which was -1.0% less than the previous year figure. The maize harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.3% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total maize harvested area peaked in 2012, falling back in the following year. From 2013 to 2015, the total maize harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
